Adentro and Leviton Crosses

by Donna DeYoung, breeder of Pure Spanish Andalusian Horses for sale. Article updated 02/23/09.

This is one of several articles that explain the bloodlines behind our breeding program. My mare Keberes D is a daughter of Granadino XI 1978 by Leviton. You can see how closely Leviton and Adentro show up in her pedigree below.

Adentro, a bay Spanish stallion, was born in 1959, sired by Juglar out of Sena. He had 72 offspring and 108 siblings (by either sire or dam). Adentro was bred by the Yeguada Militar de Jerez de la Frontera.

Leviton, also bred by the Yeguada Militar de Jerez de la Frontera, was born in 1970. He had 173 offspring and 93 siblings.

As you can see in their pedigrees, Adentro and Leviton's dams were both sired by Estepeno. Many horses with military breeding will show both Adentro and Leviton in their pedigrees.  Most of the military horses go directly back to the Bocado brand breeding (see the "H" in the pedigree which is representative of a bit or bocado). Bocado horses are also known as Carthusian and were a special bloodline saved from extinction by the monks during the French invasion. Also known as "Cartujano" horses, Cartujanos are an important part of the preservation of the breed as they are thought to be one of the purist lines of old Spanish blood.

Horses Related to Adentro and Leviton

By looking at pedigrees and photos of horses with bloodlines similar to the ones you are breeding, you will begin to see family traits and resemblances. This research, if done correctly, can confirm that you are going in the "right" direction. This is especially important if you are breeding for heritage and breed preservation.

For example, Hermoso VIII was a stallion who was sired by Leviton and was out of a mare (Hermosa VIII) who was sired by Adentro.  Hermoso VIII as bred by Miguel Garcia Dieguez Lopez. This farm in Spain was the location of where several Denham horses were imported from, including Granadino XI 1978. As you can see from Granadino's and Hermoso's pedigrees, they are almost full brothers. The only difference is that Granadino's dam was Granadina VII and Hermoso's dam was Hermosa VIII. However, Granadina VII and Hermosa VIII were full sisters and sired by Adentro.

Hermoso VIII (the nearly full brother to Granadino XI 1978) produced a mare named Encantadora XXIII and here is her photo as well as several other daughters of Hermoso VIII.

The Adentro/Juglar/Sena bloodline is fairly rare outside of Spain. It can be found via Granadino XI and Aragones III in the U.S. Denham Ranch lines and in Australia.
